Question for barn owners on stable hands asking for a day off?

Seriously, just ask! The worst thing they can say is no and the best thing you can do is give them as much notice as possible. Stuff does come up and hopefully the barn is able to accommodate you. As you said, offer to make up for lost time but you may also have to consider that you may not be able to go for this planned trip, so just bear that in mind.
