Should i be getting paid for doing this?

My workplace wants me to watch some training videos. My problem is they want me to do it before my shift, after my shift, or during my lunch break (basically they want us to watch a bunch of hours worth of videos off the clock). MY question is; is this legal? I've heard that training and anything work related must be compensated for. Also, I took a management position and they wanted me to do some work books at home on my own time. I was still making minimum wage being a manger so i wasn't motivated enough to do the workbooks so i stepped down from my position. Anyway I'd also appreciate any websites that'll give me information on this subject. Thanks for your help.
