Whats the best foundation to use?

Im overwhelmed with the variety of makeup out there. My problem is that I cant find one that actually stays on. I dont want to cake it on either so I would like to know if there is a foundation/powder that actually stays put. I dont use primer and I have been told that this helps a lot under makeup, any suggestions on what brands to use or your opinions on what to do would be greatly appreciated :)
