Why is windows DVD maker such a piece of ****?

Is there a decent, free program I can use to just get these DVDs done with? I've wasted about five now, because of this piece of ****. First there's a green bar, then I get that fixed, and it squishes the video, which is 16:9, to 4:3, and compensates by filling the rest of the 16:9 aspect ratio with black bars, then I get that fixed and there's no sound. It's just one thing after another with this trash program. It should be as simple as putting a disk in and burning, not fixing a million problems, only to be stuck with yet another problem, caused by the solution for the previous problem. What idiot made this?
